Just two members made the start line for this years Brass Monkey, a race which lived up to its name with cold air and persistent rain greeting runners. The fast, flat course which loops southwards from York racecourse, proved once again why it’s so popular.

First up was Jack Martindale who, despite an administrative error in packing the wrong red vest, fortunately didn’t slow him down. Following a slightly disruptive build up dealing with some shin splints Jack went into the race targeting around 75 mins. Once settled into a good rhythm, he was feeling confident that something special was on the cards. Feeling strong whilst brushing close to 5k and 10k PBs was a nice surprise. He crossed the line in 1.10.19, finishing 26th and knocking a huge 3:37 off his previous PB.

Next over the line was Reuben Cole, who was also not feeling too confident going into the race after a far from ideal build up, but was determined to get the year off to a good start. While Jack enjoyed being nestled into a nice group, the field had thinned out a couple of minutes back, leaving Reuben to run solo for the majority of the race. A sharp stitch that lingered for around 5 miles didn’t help him out either, and was struggling after going through 10k in just under 34 mins. A small group of runners had caught up to him with a couple of miles to go and Reuben managed to cling on to them and go through the finish in 1.12.55, a 45 second PB and finishing 59th.

Overall, it was a fantastic event. Brilliantly organised and highly recommended for next year – just double check you pack the right vest.
