Graves Park
SEG athletes claimed their first regional title with a win by the senior men’s A team at the Norther Cross Country Relays in Graves Park. It was another successful day for the SEG with the women’s teams finishing 5th and 7th and the men’s section fielding 5 teams.
Connor Milnes, recovering from a cold, got the A team off to a great start coming in 3rd in 10:20. Jamie Hall, also suffering from an infection, held on to 4th place with a time of 10:39. Chris Law ran confidently to take HHS into the lead on the 3rd leg in 10.32. Cameron Bell stretched the lead on the final leg to record 10:16. Cameron and Connor ran the 3rd and 4th fastest legs of the day.
The B team finished 10th with Euan Brown leading out in 10:49 for 11th. Leo Cossham moved up to 7th with a time of 10:54. Rob Smith ran 11:18 for 10th place and Tom Buckley held the position with a time of 11:34.
The C team, composed mostly of U20s, finished a fine 13th. Dylan Stevens looked strong on the first leg, finishing 22nd in 11:13. Sam Tierney came in 27th in 12:05 and Jonah Patton gained three places to finish 24th in 11:44. Jed Bartlett, making his debut for the club and stepping in at the last minute, ran very well to record 10:38 and bring the team home in 13th.
Craig Fishwick led off the D team, running 11:16 for 24th. `Richard Barker was 26th in 11:54. Thomas Harrison gained 4 places with 11:28. Christian Battersby moved up to 16th on the final leg with a time of 11:25.
Gareth Phoenix opened for the E team with 13:54 for 48th.Rob Wapshott moved up to 45th with 13:04. Phil Radford, again stepping in at the last minute, ran 11:38 for 38th. Ryan Griffiths completed the team with a strong run to finish 34th in 11:35.
The women’s A team were in contention for a medal throughout the race. Evie Brailsford ran a fine first leg for 6th place in 12:19, the 9th fastest leg of the day. Charlotte Slack moved into 4th with 12:43. Nicky Squires was involved in a close race over the final leg, recording 12:47 for 5th place.
Saskia Huxham got the B team off to a good start with 11th place in 12:31. Hannah Metherall ran well to finish 8th in 13:08. Eve Pannone moved through to take 7th in 13:05.
In the U17M’s race, Olmo Combley took over in 21st at the start of the 2nd leg and moved into 15th with 7:56. Euan Patton ran a strong final leg to bring the team home in 13th in 7:27, the 7th fastest leg of the day.
Again the team managers, Dave Archer and Charlotte Slack, did a great job in getting out 7 full teams—despite late withdrawals due to illness—and ensuring continued success for SEG athletes.
